Nestled in amongst acres of fruit trees, just
north of the town of Zillah, WA, the Two Mountain Winery lives in what was once
the cold storage room for the Schmidt family farm's apples. Nephews of winery
founder Ron Schmidt, and now third generation farmers, Patrick and Matt Rawn,
oversee Two Mountain's winemaking and business affairs.
The winery is named for the two major volcanic peaks in Washington, and visible from the vineyards -- Mt Adams and Mt Rainier. Their quality wines come from estate grown vineyards. Current production level is around 3,000 cases annually.
Opened to the public in 2002, the folks at Two Mountain bring an
attitude of fun to the work of growing and making wine. It seems like there is
always an interesting
event going on around their farm and winery. Such as the summer "Dinner and a
Movie" nights, when you can drop by with your lawn chair, have dinner and watch
classic movies out on the lawn while enjoying the wines. Or the "Vineyard Crew"
events, where Matt offers hands on grape-growing lessons in the vineyard. Even
the name of their wine club (Friends and Family Wine Club) belies their casual
but genuine friendliness.
Two Mountain's spring releases include a 2007 Off-Dry Riesling,
2005 Cabernet Franc, and Hidden Horse Red Table Wine. This year for the first
time, Yakima Valley Tribute will be released. It is a special non-vintage red
blend honoring Two Mountain's founder Ron Schmidt. Last fall we saw the new
releases of their 2005 Chardonnay, 2004 Syrah, 2004 Merlot, 2004
Cabernet Sauvignon
and 2004 Reserve Cabernet Franc and a 2005 Lemberger. The winery also releases
a Dry Rosé annually in June.
